The Whole Child Approach to Adult Well-Being
What is well-being?
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as a state of well-being in which individuals realize their own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and are able to make a contribution to their community.
Adult well-being is important in its own right, and it’s a foundation for creating learning environments in which children feel safe and connected.
We believe:
Adults who feel safe and cared for are better able to create spaces where children feel safe and cared for.
Patterns of adult behavior influence the patterns of behavior among children.
Establishing and maintaining one’s own well-being is an ongoing effort.
How to support adult well-being:
Well-being does not look the same for everyone. And, there is no single ‘right way’ to support staff well-being. Well-being / mental health are influenced by a complex mix of biological, environmental, and psychological factors. While genetics do influence mental health, an individual's development as well as the context in which development occurs also play a critical role in shaping mental health throughout one's life.
Three factors influence influence mental health:
The environment within and outside of school
Relationships with others
Individual factors
A strong strategy for supporting adult well-being will consider all three.
